Modern powder room makeover on a budget

This challenge is hosted by the always awesome Erin fromLemons, Lavender, and Laundry. If you’re just joining me, make sure to check out my post for the first week, which detailed my plans and vision for our lil powder room. Then you can check out last week’s post on patching, painting, and updating the lighting on a budget. 🙂 This week I’m going to talk about what’s going on the walls. The new mirror, some art, and some shelving made out of scrap wood.

As a reminder, here’s what the mirror looked like before:

Something about that oval just makes me die a little bit inside. So it had to come down. I ended up going with this mirror, which I bought using a gift card I got from credit card points to keep my total out of pocket costs down.

I saw the mirror online before purchasing it and actually thought it was too girly for my tastes. It looks too bling-y in the picture on the website. But when I saw it in the store, I actually loved it. It is pretty bling-y, but it adds a bit of extra glam to this super tiny space.

Wall Art

Without a doubt, this is my favorite part of this space! And it’s also where I spent most of my $100 budget. I bought six 5×7 watercolor prints of animals in flower crowns from Dandelion Paper Co. I don’t even remember what I was searching for when I stumbled across the sloth, but I lost it as soon as I saw him. The artist has so many lovely prints, so it was hard to pick which six I wanted. I ended up going with these guys:

I matted them in black Ikea Ribba frames that have a matte fit for 5×7 prints and hung them in two rows of three. I had an excellent (albeit a little paranoid-looking) supervisor:

I decided to put the open shelving on the black accent wall behind the toilet. I used two pieces of scrap pine from my shop. We just gave them one coat of Minwax stain in Nautral and two coats of Minwax Polyurethane in Semigloss. I really wanted to keep them lighter so they’d pop against the black wall. We mounted them with Ekby black brackets from Ikea.

I’ll show you what they look like mounted next week. That’ll be the final post for this little room makeover, so make sure to swing back by to check it all out!

As a reminder…

Here’s what I already have and plan to reuse:

  • Paint & paint supplies
  • Toilet roll (spray painting it)
  • Hand towel from kitchen
  • Scrap wood for shelving
  • Stain & polyurethane for shelving

Here’s what I need to buy:

  • Mirror
  • Shades for light fixture
  • Shelving brackets
  • Art
  • Frames
  • Towel hook
  • Spackling

And make sure to check out everyone else’s progress this week, too!
