Easy Outdoor DIY Projects
Hey gang! Today I’m sharing a roundup of some of my favorite projects from the May At Home DIY Challenge. The theme was outdoor DIY projects—make something outdoors pretty! These 15 DIY outdoor ideas will inspire you to get outside (if you haven’t started already) to get your space ready for summer.
1. DIY Pineapple Doormat from Two Feet First
I love this adorable pineapple welcome doormat! It was made using a few simple supplies—paint, stencils, and a plain old coir doormat. Check out all the steps you need to take to make your own at Megan’s blog.
2. DIY painted doormat by me
If DIY painted doormats are up your alley but pineapples aren’t your thing, you can check out this custom doormat I made a few years ago. I’ve also included a template you can print, trace, and use on your own doormat.
3. Outdoor porch sign by Dukes and Duchesses
This is a really cute outdoor sign and would be an easy vinyl project for beginners, too. I’ve never sealed vinyl for outdoor use, but now I kind of want to try.
4. Modern Mailbox Makeover by Living Letter Home
Love, love, love this project! You’ll be amazed at the before and after transformation on this one. It’s just my style! I wish we had a single mailbox at our house so I could customize it like this. An easy and high-impact DIY.
5. Modern outdoor dining table build by me
I originally made this modern outdoor dining table last year for our patio area. When we decided to make it more of a lounge space, we moved this table up to the second-story deck. You can get the free step-by-step build plans to make your own.
6. Vertical Planter Wall by The Handyman’s Daughter
I love Vineta’s vertical planter wall! It’s so pretty and would look amazing with some trailing plants. Just imagine how great it will look when all of the plants really get growing.
Speaking of vertical gardens, I made this vertical garden for our little balcony years ago. It had a bed in the bottom for lettuce and pot flips along the slats for herbs. I’m still using these same pot clips in our backyard today—they are on our deck posts.
Our DIY squirrel repellent spray was also critical to helping us keep the adorable but menacing squirrels out of this little garden.
8. Easy deck railing planter by me
This is a simple woodworking project that would be super for a beginner. It’s also a nice high-impact project for very little money. And it really dresses up a plain deck railing. It took me forever to find brackets that fit my white plastic railings, so hopefully I can save you some time.
9. Thompson’s Water Seal Review by Kenya Rae
I also did a post last year on using Thompson’s Water Seal to seal clay pots before painting them and also reviewed Ready Seal Wood Stain and Sealer. But Kenya’s tutorial for refinishing her deck is super detailed.
She has a few videos for sanding the deck and refinishing it, and the before and after pictures look absolutely amazing! A must see.
10. How to Remove Paint From a Clay Pot by me
The first of a few projects in this post featured in our tiny backyard. I got this large clay pot form Ollie’s Bargain Outlet last year and painted it, but I lazily left it out all winter so the paint got all chippy and gross.
For this post, I share how I removed the paint from the clay pot, resealed it, and repainted it so it looked brand new. I also included a video 🙂
11. Terracotta Planter Update by Renovating Maples Manor
I always love a cute terracotta pot makeover! Paint is a great way to transform little pots and personalize them to fit your style.
12. Steps to Create a Weed-Free Flower Bed by Girl, Just DIY
Toni lays out all the steps you need to take to create a weed-free flower bed. I took similar steps when putting in our DIY rock landscaping last year. One year later? Still no weeds for us, either!
This was a really easy project that added so much to our outdoor space. The globe string lights under our deck provide the perfect amount of ambient outdoor lighting without being too much. Since we don’t have really any lighting out there, they are perfect.
14. DIY Concrete Paver Outdoor Coffee Table by me
I made this slim DIY concrete paver outdoor coffee table for our outdoor deck space. We needed something to be durable and to fit well in a compact space. I also made a matching concrete paver side table. We really love these!
15. Removable AC Unit Screen by me
And one of my favorite DIYs! Want to hide an outdoor AC unit? So did we. So we made this removable HVAC unit screen. I love how this one turned out, and it really wasn’t that difficult at all.
