DIY Outdoor Furniture: 40 Porch & Patio Projects
Hey guys! One of my really popular posts is my roundup of cheap DIY furniture projects. There are some outdoor projects in that roundup, but with spring on the horizon, I thought I’d so a similar roundup that focuses exclusively on outdoor projects.
This roundup includes a few of my own projects, but I’m also sharing DIY outdoor furniture and project ideas from some amazingly talented bloggers. Their DIYs, tutorials, and build plans will help you whip your outdoor space, porch, or patio in to shape by summer.
DIY Outdoor Planters
Let’s kick off this post with some DIY outdoor planters, including porch and patio planters, privacy screen/planter combos, rolling planters, potting benches, and more.
1. Outdoor Wooden Porch Planter Box DIY
I’m going to kick this roundup with a DIY wooden porch planer box I did last year in partnership with Timisha from Tool Box Divas! She designed this planter using only furring strips, and I did the build. It’s a low-cost way to add some charm to your front porch!
2. DIY Front Porch Planter Box
I knew I had to include this cedar front porch planter box from Making Manzanita int his post because it’s so simple and chic. I love the combo of unfinished wood and black-painted trim—one of my favorite combos, actually! This planter is a great size, too, and would fit nicely on our tiny porch!
3. DIY Trough Planter Box Using Tiles
Grillo Designs made this gorgeous DIY trough planter box using tiles as an accent—and it turned out great! It’s a nice spin on a traditional wooden outdoor planter. And I love that it’s also on caster wheels, making it mobile.
4. Modern A-Frame Plant Stand Build Plans
Ashley at Handmade Haven made this gorgeous A-frame plant stand that, honestly, would look good anywhere! I’d love to make this to maximize some of my indoor plant space, too. It looks great on her porch though. This would be a fab solution for a bunch of potted herbs.
5. Black and Wood Outdoor Planter Box Plans
Shara at Woodshop Diaries also made this gorgeous black trimmed and unfinished wood look planter. Hers is a bit bigger than the one Making Manzanita made, so if you have a little more room in your outdoor space, this might be a better solution.
6. DIY Wood Porch Planter Box
This DIY outdoor planter box by Crafted by the Hunts is absolutely STUNNING! I love the slatted wood look and how they’ve designed it specifically to fit a plastic planter inside. That makes changing out your plants for the season super easy and also elevates the cheap plastic planter.
7. DIY Outdoor Privacy Screen
Another great DIY from Crafted by the Hunts—what a great blog! Hang your potted plants on this privacy screen as a way to hide unsightly but necessary things in your outdoor space (like trash cans, compost bins, utilities boxes, etc.). This turned out gorgeous, and I love those pot hangers.
8. DIY Outdoor Potting Bench Plans
A DIY potting bench is a great way to make potting your plants easy while also adding some visual interest to an outdoor space otherwise reserved for utilities—not pretty things. Why not go over the top like PMQ for Two did with hers? It’s adorable!
DIY Outdoor Furniture for Lounging
No outdoor space is complete without furniture for lounging. These DIY outdoor furniture ideas share sleek chair tutorials, outdoor sectionals, DIY outdoor couches (with hidden storage!), DIY hammock stands, and more.
9. Rustic Style Two Seater Outdoor Patio Sofa
Another from Medina at Grillo Designs—this easy to build outdoor sofa has cushions and fits well in a small space. Bonus—it doesn’t cost a ton of money to make.
10. DIY Live-Edge Slab Outdoor Sofa from 2×4 Pine
I love this DIY outdoor sofa with a live edge back by Abbotts at home because it has such a different look than the usual 2×4 bench builds out there. That’s because it uses a beautiful live-edge slab piece for the back rest. I also love the paint color of the base and arm rests—it looks great with the stain color. (See more easy 2×4 build projects!)
11. The Ultimate DIY Outdoor Sectional Plans
Looking to build a large DIY outdoor sectional complete with tons of seating and tables—all without spending a ton of money? Check out this tutorial from Rain on a Tin Roof. You could easily paint or stain it using an outdoor finish of your choice, too, for a different look.

13. Modern Outdoor Patio Sofa with Hidden Storage Build Plans
Elisha from Pneumatic Addict is so incredibly talented—her builds always blow me away. This outdoor sofa with hidden storage she designed and built is no different. I’m all about the smart and hidden storage projects…you have to click over to see where the hidden storage is in this one!!
14. How to Build Adirondack Chairs from Scratch
A classic—learn how to build Adirondack chairs from Just the Woods. These chairs are comfy and never go out of style, but they sure are expensive if you buy them in stores and want real wood chairs, not plastic. Why not try your hand at making your own?
15. DIY Outdoor Modern Patio Chairs
These outdoor modern chairs from House on Longwood Lane are the matching set to the modern outdoor couch build already shared in this post. I love the light wood look of these, too. Awesome job Kourtni!
16. DIY Patio Loungers
Ariel from PMQ for Two can always be counted on for a glam over-the-top project. These colorful DIY patio loungers are an easy build that she dressed up with pink paint and a variety of bright cushions and pillows. Bruce the dog seems to approve.
17. How to Build Modern Porch Chairs
Another DIY modern porch chairs project—this time from Shara and Woodshop Diaries. These chairs are gorgeous. They look very polished, sleek, and professional. Which is no surprise since Shara made them—she’s so talented! And she’s got the plans for these pretty chairs over on her blog. 🙂
18. DIY Hammock Stand with Redwood Boards
My buddy Anika over at Anika’s DIY Life made this hammock stand with Redwood boards last year…and it made me want a hammock for the first time ever. I so wish we had room for one, but this project is a great option if you don’t want to dig holes in your lawn for posts or don’t have a tree to anchor is too. Well done!!
19. DIY Hammock Stand from Posts
And if you want to hang a hammock and aren’t opposed to anchoring the posts in the ground, check out H2O Bungalow’s hammock stand using posts. And check out that view!
20. DIY Outdoor Patio or Porch Swing
Who doesn’t love a good porch or patio swing? Crafted by the Hunts has an easy diy porch swing tutorial you can follow to make your own. My parents have a porch swing, and Ramona loves it! I wish we had a good spot for one at our house.

A good 2×4 project helps you create something beautiful without spending a lot of money. This DIY modern bench project from Girl Just DIY is a good example of that. Her easy-to-follow tutorial will have you building your very own bench in no time.
DIY Outdoor Furniture: Tables
Now roundup of DIY outdoor furniture projects would be completely without TABLES! And I’ve got a ton of different DIY outdoor tables to share. I’m including everything from side tables to outdoor coffee and dining tables…plus tables with hidden storage, coolers, and more!
22. Easy DIY Patio Tables
Another cute DIY from H2) Bungalow—these colorful painted patio tables are a great upcycle! And a great way to customize a thrifted or plain wood piece to match your outdoor colors.
23. Outdoor End Tables With Built-in Ice Bucket
I LOVE this outdoor end table with built-in ice bucket from The Handyman’s Daughter. And I love the fact that it matches all o the other pieces. Super convenient—and you could use this approach for a small inset flower bed if you wanted.
24. DIY Concrete Side Table
The first concrete project on this roundup—Making Manzanita’s DIY concrete side table would be a cute addition to any outdoor space! If you don’t need a side table, you could also make it a plant stand. 🙂
25. DIY Patio Umbrella Stand Side Table
Really cute umbrella stand side table idea from Houseful of Handmade. I love that this accommodates the umbrella pole without needed a hole saw. (I also have a post about how to drill a hole in wood for an umbrella pole.)
26. Outdoor Coffee Table Build Plans
Saws on Skates built this genius outdoor coffee table with 4 hidden side tables…I’m also envisioning these as potential stools! I love how all of the side tables can be neatly tucked under the table when they’re not in use—perfect for small patios or balconies.
27. Easy DIY Outdoor Coffee Table
A simple, cute, and easy outdoor coffee table build from Handyman’s Daughter might be all you need. I love that she used different widths of boards for the coffee table’s topper, too. It adds a bit more interest.
28. DIY Concrete Paver Outdoor Coffee Table
One of my favorite and most used outdoor projects of ours…our outdoor DIY coffee table with concrete top! We did the cheater version for the concrete top, too, making it even easier and less messy. It just uses pavers! I’ve got the full tutorial on my blog at the link above, as well as a tutorial for the matching side table!
29. DIY Slatted Outdoor Dining Table Plans
We built this slatted outdoor dining table last year to have a place on our balcony to set things, eat, and anchor our umbrella (we drilled a hole in the top after this pic was taken). I used ipe for the top—first time I’ve ever worked with it—and also have a whole post about how to protect ipe for outdoor use.
30. DIY Glass-Topped Outdoor Table
Another from Pneumatic Addict—Elisha’s beautiful glass topped outdoor wood table tutorial will leave you with a piece that truly looks store-bought. Elisha adds the best touches to her projects—check out those gorgeous brackets on the corner!
31. DIY Outdoor Patio Fire Table
Another project from Crafted by the Hunts, their DIY fire table for just $120! The finished piece is pretty gorgeous!! Check out how they mounted the fire pit in the full tutorial post.
32. DIY Outdoor Buffet Table
This gorgeous DIY outdoor buffet table by Atta Girl Says would also make a fantastic potting bench with the shelving and all of those hooks! I love functional project like this that can be used for a number of things. Grab the full tutorial on her blog!
33. Outdoor Beverage Table DIY
This DIY outdoor beverage table with cooler by Saws on Skates is another multipurpose project. I really love that this one can be a table when you don’t need it to cool drinks—but when you need it to be a cooler, you just pop the top off! Check out the tutorial and how great it looks with the lid off.
34. DIY Outdoor Bar Table Using 2x4s
Another budget project, this 2X4 outdoor bar table DIY is a perfect cheap project to add more function to your space. Looks like a great place for some people watching, too!
35. Modern Outdoor Kids Table Build
I built this modern outdoor kids table last year in partnership with Anika’s DIY Life—she’s got the plans on her site, and I executed them for Ramona to use! Now that it’s winter, we moved this set inside and have it at my parents’ house in their basement. So it’s not just for outdoor use—we just finished ours for outdoor use.
36. DIY Water Sensory Table For Toddlers
I also partnered with Anika’s DIY Life on this great DIY wooden water table for toddlers. It fits the plastic bins perfectly and is finished for outdoor use. Last year Ramona she just splashed around with some balls in the plastic tubs. For the winter, we brought it inside and put beans in it, which she LOVED (although it was super messy).
This spring, we’ve already broken it out once and filled the tubs with water beads. It is so versatile! She can be trusted not to eat those this year…and we love them, too! They are weirdly relaxing. We also saved the lids so we could store toys inside the tubs when she’s not playing with the table.
DIY Outdoor Furniture for Entertaining
If you’re into outdoor entertaining, here are a few awesome projects to help you up your entertaining game! From bar carts to islands and grilling stations, you’ll love these functional and gorgeous DIYs.
37. DIY Outdoor Grill Cart Build Plans
This DIY outdoor grill cart build from my friends Morgan and Sean at Charleston Crafted is the perfect addition to any outdoor entertaining space! We desperately need something for grilling on our balcony so we don’t ave to throw everything in a giant plastic storage tub 🙂
38. DIY Outdoor Kitchen Island
Another gorgeous outdoor entertaining DIY, Houseful of Handmade’s DIY outdoor kitchen island would be an amazing addition to your patio. I love that she also added caster wheels onto the build, too.
39. DIY Rolling Outdoor Island for a Patio
Another rolling outdoor island DIY, and this one FITS THE GRILL. Now Elisha from Pneumatic Addict is just showing off. This really did turn out gorgeous, as her projects always do! Check out the full tutorial over on Elisha’s blog.
40. DIY AC Unit Screen to use an HVAC Unit
And the last project of this roundup…our DIY ac unit screen that we built to hide out HVAC unit and utilities. We have such a small outdoor space that we didn’t want the unit to be in our face whenever we’re out there. So we built this L-shaped slatted screen.
The slats and only two sides allow for air flow, while the “screen” design lets us early slide the screen out of the way if we need to get back there or access the unit for anything. Super happy with how this has held up over the last two years, too!
