Most of these pieces are also inspired by retail furniture pieces, so you’re sure to save some money by DIYing your own with these “inspired by” pieces.
Love DIY furniture? Here are 35 awesome projects!
Today I’m sharing an awesome roundup of 35 DIY furniture ideas for the home—it features a lot of my favorite projects from some of my blogging friends, as well as a few of my own! The post is separated into different categories: end tables, regular tables, outdoor spaces, storage pieces, and more. Enjoy!
DIY End Table Ideas for The Home
End tables are some of the best beginner projects if you’re just getting started. They are usually fairly easy and straightforward, and they are also typically smaller. So they can be built in less time. If you’re a more experienced woodworker, you might even have enough scrap wood to make some of these.
1. DIY Space Saving End Table
Speaking of scrap wood projects, I made this DIY space saving end table for my home using scrap from our modern murphy bed project (which is also featured later in this post!). We use this DIY space-saving c-shaped end table every day. It’s the perfect addition to our living room setup. Though we did move it to the other side of the couch. 🙂

2. Retro Cat House Side Table
My side table that doubles as an indoor cat house is one of my favorite projects. In fact, it was recently featured in Better Homes and Gardens, which was my sweet kitty Blanche’s modeling debut. I like pieces that serve multiple purposes, so being a table (or a plant stand, ha) and a nice place for our kitties to hide is great.

3. ZGallerie-Inspired Tree Trunk Side Table
I love this ZGallerie-inspired silver tree trunk side table from H20 Bungalow! It blows my plain ol’ stained tree trunk side table out of the water. Check out the full tutorial on how to make this extremely affordable and chic piece.

4. DIY X-Leg Accent Table
It wouldn’t be a DIY furniture roundup without a beautiful project from my wonderful friend Anika! Her DIY X-leg accent table is one of her more popular projects and definitely looks store bought. If color isn’t your thing, you could easily build this and finish it using a more muted color. (Yes, I’m boring.)

5. DIY Ikea Side Table Makeover
Building not your thing? I’ve got a few furniture makeover ideas in this roundup, too. There’s nothing better than an Ikea hack, and this one is simple but with a high impact. Sustain my Craft Habit’s DIY Ikea side table makeover uses paint, stain, and a small hardware update.

7. Plow and Hearth Inspired Chevron End Table
I have to admit, I’ve never shopped at or even browsed a Plow and Hearth! Maybe it’s not as popular where I live. But when I saw this unique piece, I had to include it in the roundup. Virginia Sweet Pea’s Plow and Hearth inspired chevron end table is a great build. I’m envisioning it being the perfect double-decker cozy cat bed. 🙂

DIY Furniture Ideas with Storage
One of the best things about DIYing your own furniture is that you can make it perfect for your own needs. And that includes incorporating storage. Here are a few DIY furniture ideas for the home that include clever storage.
8. DIY Murphy Bed With Storage Shelving
The DIY murphy bed we made for our multi-use space downstairs is the perfect definition of clever storage. Not only does it have built-in shelving added to it…it can literally store a bed! A real bed. If you’re not familiar with murphy beds, they are also sometimes call wall beds.
That’s because you can fold the mattress part of the bed up into the piece of furniture—up against the wall. Here is a photo of our DIY murphy bed folded out ready for the in-laws to visit. When we don’t have visitors, we simply fold it up, which creates space for Ramona to play.

9. DIY Shoe Cubby
Another one of my builds, my DIY shoe cubby is one of my most popular! It’s such a simple build, but it can be adjusted to be different sizes if you’re creative enough. I designed ours to fit our shoes, including a few larger slots for boots.

10. DIY Midcentury Plant Stand
This piece isn’t exactly furniture, but plant lovers will enjoy it. My DIY midcentury plant stand with hairpin legs elevates a large plant while making room for smaller plants around it. And I made this project from scrap wood!

11. DIY West Elm Inspired Bookshelf
This clever DIY West Elm inspired bookshelf from Two Feet First is a beautiful way to store just about anything. It’s also a style that would look good in just about any room. Just tweak the finish to give it a more rustic or modern look to suit your tastes.

12. Black and White Ikea Shoe Cabinet Hack
Another Ikea hack—PMQ for Two’s black and white Ikea shoe cabinet hack is a neat way to customize the plain Ikea shoe cabinet. It’s such a clever way to store shoes using minimal space, and like most Ikea pieces, it is a blank slate you can style as you choose.

13. DIY Corner Cabinet
A DIY corner cabinet is the perfect way to make use of those awkward corners in your room! I have a few awkward corners, and since they are usually by windows, I typically put a large plant there. But if you need some storage, something like this would be perfect. Especially because you can set a plant on top of it, too 😉

14. DIY Bench with Storage Compartments
I love the Ikea Nornas line—just my style. So when I saw this DIY Ikea Nornas look alike bench with storage compartments from Sawdust Sisters, I fell in love! If you don’t live near an Ikea or just love the satisfaction of building your furniture instead of buying it, you can whip this piece out in a day. It’s perfect for the base of the bed, too.

15. DIY Painted Cabinet Makeover
Another paint project, because Toolbox Divas is awesome 🙂 Her DIY painted cabinet makeover post proves that with a little paint and some hardware upgrades, you can give any old piece a beautiful custom look.

16. DIY Bar Cart With Removable Wooden Top
This DIY bar cart with a removable wooden tray by Saws on Skates blew me away! How convenient to be able to roll the bar cart around, but then remove the tray as well! I love multipurpose items like this. And it looks very chic, too.

17. DIY Modern Toy Box
Our DIY modern toy box is a great solution for our multipurpose room. We have it in front of our window. It stores Ramona’s toys when she isn’t playing with them, and the top has an upholstered cushion that creates some comfy seating. But if I’m being honest, it’s mostly a sunny cat bed. 🙂

DIY Table Ideas for the Home
From coffee tables to dining tables and more, DIY tables are a great way to create a custom centerpiece in any room. Here are a few ideas for you.
18. DIY Butcher Block Coffee Table
This was one of my earlier DIYs when I wanted to try my hand at edge-gluing an entire table top together. I’m actually writing this post on my laptop, which is sitting on this coffee table! It has held up incredibly well over the years. The top sits on two steel a-frame legs that I can use again if I ever decide to upgrade the table top in the future.

19. DIY Farmhouse Table
Farmhouse isn’t really my style, but I know a lot of people love it. So I’m including this absolutely lovely DIY farmhouse table—it’s so well put together and designed!

20. DIY West Elm Inspired Dining Table
Another West Elm project—my friends Morgan and Sean at Charleston Crafted created this beautiful West Elm inspired reclaimed wood dining table for their home. I love the big chunky legs on this!

21. DIY Ballard Designs Inspired Console Table
My friend Anika from Anika’s DIY Life did an awesome job on her DIY Ballard Designs console table. I also really love the gray-brown finish she used on it. You can download the free build plans for this piece over on Anika’s site!

22. DIY Coffee Table
Restoration Hardware has some amazing pieces, but they are pricey. If you want to make your own DIY Restoration Hardware inspired coffee table, this one by Simplicity in the South is very well done! While the pillars on the corners aren’t exactly my style, I could see making a similar coffee table using something with more of a square shape. I love the double-decker style of this—perfect for blanket or toy storage.

23. DIY Console with Sliding Barn Doors
Jamie Costiglio is constantly churning out absolutely amazing projects—I have no idea how she keeps it up! Her DIY console with sliding barn doors is a cute way to create some more creative storage instead of just using a hinged door.

DIY Furniture Ideas for the Home: Kids Spaces
Since I have a toddler, I had to include a few DIY furniture ideas for kids spaces. Kids furniture is really easy to make because it’s smaller and easier to manage if you’re new to woodworking. I also just love making things for my daughter to enjoy 🙂
24. DIY Step Stool for Toddlers
I made this cute DIY step stool for toddlers to use in our bathroom so my daughter could reach the sink. But we ended up moving it up to her room because she carries it around to be able to reach books and toys. I used mostly 2×2 for this build and modeled it after a Crate and Barrel stool. It turned out awesome!

25. DIY Modern Dollhouse Bookcase
Probably one of my favorite projects I’ve built! This DIY modern dollhouse bookcase is the perfect little interactive shelf for Ramona to fuss around with. She loves rearranging books and toys in the little cubbies. Now that she’s a bit older, we have it up in her room.

26. DIY Lego Table with Storage
My DIY lego table with storage also doubles as an art table and is one of my newer projects featured on this list! I built it for Ramona’s Christmas present and modeled it after an Ikea Filsat table, as well as a few other kids play table options. The top s reversible and removable. 🙂

27. DIY Kids Art Center
I absolutely love this DIY kids art center by Jaime Costiglio! I said earlier in this post that she made some really awesome projects, and this is no exception. I’d love to have room for a kids art center this big! I love the extra storage for art supplies and the big surface area for drawing, too.

DIY Outdoor Furniture Ideas
And let’s wrap up with a few DIY outdoor furniture ideas! Because although this post is technically about DIY furniture ideas for the home…who doesn’t consider their yard part of their home? I love our little outdoor space and have a few easy pieces I’ve made for outside, as well as some other creative ideas from some talented bloggers.
28. Concrete Paver Outdoor Coffee Table
First up for DIY outdoor furniture—my concrete paver outdoor coffee table! I made this using 2×2 pine for the square-shaped base. I sized the base to fit three pavers as the table top. What better top than pavers for an outdoor table? They hold up so well and absorb moisture, so they act like giant coasters for drinks.

29. Concrete Paver Side Table
And you eagle eyes might have spotted the DIY concrete paver side table in the previous picture as well. I loved the coffee table so much that I had to make a coordinating side table! This was a perfect way to use up some of the smaller 2×2 scraps as well, and all I had to do was pick up one more paver. Pocket hole joinery makes these strong pieces, too.

30. Wooden Porch Planter Box DIY
Earlier this fall, I gave our front porch some love with a wooden porch planter box. I made it using mostly furring strips to keep this project super affordable. I then painted it using outdoor white opaque stain I had left over from another project.

31. Modern Outdoor Kids Table
A modern outdoor kids table was the perfect addition to our balcony. Ramona loved going out and playing around on the balcony, sitting at her little table and chairs set. It’s a great option when it’s nice outside because we’re able to see her while she’s fussing around. And the table looks pretty perfect on our gray and white deck, too!

32. Slatted Outdoor Dining Table
And right next to R’s cute little table I’ve got a bigger table for us, a slatted outdoor dining table. I didn’t get around to building benches or chairs to go with it, but I’ll do that this spring. I also used a new wood for this table—Brazilian Walnut—and talked about how to seal it and protect it outdoors.

33. DIY Ballard Designs Tufted Bench
This Ballard Designs inspired tufted bench makeover would be a beautiful addition to any covered outdoor seating area. It can be easily customized using outdoor paint or finish and a water-repellant fabric of your choice. (Check out my post about how to upholster a chair cushion, too.)

34. Chunky Outdoor Dining Table
This table is no longer with us, but it served its purpose for a while before moving on! I built it a few years ago. It’s best for larger spaces as it is a chunky table and doesn’t maximize space.

35. Outdoor Buffet Table and Potting Bench
I love this project because it serves two great purposes: and outdoor buffet and a potting table bench! I would love to build one of these to save my back when I’m potting up or repotting tons of plants.

I love all of these ideas. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for stopping by!
Thank you for including my Plow and Hearth table in your round-up!
