Hi all! I got the urge to do a little holiday project one day as a way to use up the small amount of Cement All we had sitting in the garage. There’s something cool about making something as delicate as a snowflake out of something as rough as concrete. And I think they turned out really cool! I gold leafed mine for a little extra touch.
You like? Well, the good news is that this was a pretty easy—if a bit messy—project to do.
Here’s what I used for my DIY concrete and gold leaf snowflakes:
(This post contains affiliate links. You can read more about that here. Thank you!)
- Silicone snowflake mold
- Gold leaf
- Glue stick
- Concrete mix
- Disposable gloves
- Cooking oil
- Paper towels
- Baking pan
- Mixing container and something to mix with
And here’s how I did it!
Step 1: First I lightly greased the silicone snowflake molds. Then I mixed the concrete according to the instructions on my package and immediately poured it into the molds about halfway up.
Step 2: As the snowflakes were drying, I tapped the baking pan and gently dropped it from about 5 inches up onto the table to help get rid of air bubbles in the concrete. This is why I put the snowflake mold on the baking pan; I wouldn’t have been able to do the tap/drop method to get rid of air bubbles without it.
After the concrete was fully solidified, I popped the snowflakes out.
Step 3: You could leave them as is, but I had some gold leaf left over from this old abstract canvas art project (that we still have hanging in our dining area), so I dug that out of my craft closet and got to work. I used my glue stick to roughly cover the elevated areas of each snowflake. Then I carefully laid gold leaf foil down onto the snowflakes, pressing gently.
Step 4: Once the glue had dried completely, I used a paper towels to gently rub off the gold leaf. Don’t worry, gold leaf is extremely fragile, so it will come off really easily. I’d recommend doing this over a paper towel because it can get very flakey and messy.
And here are the finished snowflakes!
